Deckhands and Fishing Hands

  • We operate a fleet of 5 vessels, working in the Northern Prawn Fishery and the West Coast prawn fisheries – Kimberley, Nickol Bay and Onslow 
  • Roles includes both sea time and shore-based duties
  • Sea time would typically be 28 weeks or more per annum

Salary
• Salary from $75,000 per annum plus superannuation and other entitlements under the National Employment Standard • Bonus may be payable dependent on catch.

Qualifications, Skills, Duties & Experience

  • Experience in prawn trawling essential
  • Net mending, wire splicing and seafood processing skills essential
  • Handling ropes and wires, and operating mooring equipment when berthing and unberthing
  • Standing lookout watches at sea and adjusting the vessel’s course as directed
  • Assisting with cargo operations using on-board equipment and stowing and securing cargo
  • Patrolling vessel to ensure safety of the vessel and cargo
  • Performing routine maintenance and checks on deck equipment, cargo gear, rigging, and lifesaving and firefighting appliances
  • Attaching gear and fastening towing cables to nets
  • Hauling in fishing gear and removing fish and other marine life
  • Sorting, cleaning, grading, preserving, stowing and refrigerating catch

Seeking Diesel Mechanics Austfish Pty Ltd Darwin Fishing and Aquaculture $90,000 - $100,000 per annum plus super Permanent full-time position

Austfish Pty Ltd is seeking diesel mechanic/operators with a variety in marine skills. We are a prawn fishing fleet of 5 fishing vessels, working the Northern Prawn Fishery (NPF) and the west coast. NPF is an area across the north from the Gulf of Carpentaria to the Joseph Bonaparte Gulf and the west coast areas includes Kimberley, Nichol Bay and Onslow fisheries.

Duties include:
1. Operating and repairing onboard equipment
2. Diagnostics of vessels equipment in general.
3. Basic hydraulic experience
4. Working ashore when vessels are in port as necessary.
5. Following log book procedures.
6. Must be prepared to assist on deck of the vessels when needed.
7. Communicating effectively with the skipper of the vessel, Austfish refrigeration and hydraulics contractors, and the principal contact, Fleet/Chief Engineer Steve O Brien.
8. General maintenance including:
• over hauling and repairing diesel engines
• marine transmissions
• sea water pumps
• hydraulic systems
• refrigeration system

Desirable but not essential:
• Some electrical knowledge would be very useful.

Essential requirements:
1. Previous experience on prawning vessels.
2. The ability to go to sea for long periods of time - up to 4 months.
3. Elements of ship board safety and meet AMSA crewing requirements.
4. Experience on marine equipment and hold med 2 engine driver ticket, with refrigeration operating experience.
5. Fire systems operation and procedures certificate.
6. First aid certificate

Marine Engineer

•    Marine Engineer Driver Class 2 with refrigeration experience
•    Previous experience as Engineer on prawn trawler is essential

Skills and Duties

•    Planning, controlling and coordination the operational and maintenance requirements of the ship’s propulsion and domestic plant and equipment
•    Operating plant and equipment and performing routine maintenance on ship’s systems including mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, refrigeration and air-conditioning, pumping and fire prevention and control systems
•    Diagnostics of vessels equipment in general
•    Ensuring compliance with regulations pertaining to safety at sea
•    Examining equipment such as main propulsion engines, auxiliary engines, electrical power generating plant, refrigeration and air-conditioning plant and pumping systems
•    Conducting periodic surveys to ensure standards are maintained
•    Controlling and directing shipping operations to ensure the safe and efficient loading and transport of cargo
•    Following Log book procedures
•    Assisting on deck with processing of catch, as and when required
•    Communicating effectively with the skipper of the vessel, Austfish refrigeration and hydraulics contractors and the principal contact – Fleet Manager/Chief Engineer – Steve O’Brien
